ATLANTIS 39

Atlantis 39

The Atlantis 39 is a boat with ultramodern characteristics, both as regards the outside line as well as the interiors, featuring a distinctive deck with a rounded and wraparound design. Shortly after leaving the marina of Lavagna, we are sailing at 25 knots under the thrust of the Volvo engines.

Atlantis 39 The yacht rides the waves smoothly thanks to the V hull designed by Michael Peters, the father of Chris Crafts, Lobster Hinkleys, Cabos, Luhrs and of the racing Magnum 80. Maneuverability under way is good, engines installed are adequate and the boat has an excellent seakeeping ability. At the helm she appears to be friendly and genuine, smooth and predictable. Planing is reached easily and progressively. Stalling when planing, instead, is very slight and hardly perceptible: the Volvo Common Rail has a constant torque even at a low power regime and the hull shape contributes to a good residual glide. The rounded hull contributes to a slight lateral sliding in turns. The ample windscreen protects from water sprays coming off from the sides at high speed. Sunbathing was a priority for the designer, in fact various large sun beds are spread all over the yacht. The table in the cockpit is rather peculiar. It is made up of three parts opening as a double book to obtain a round table sitting 6. This is the ideal boat for cozy middle range cruising with the family or small groups of friends.

CONSTRUCTION CHARACTERISTICS

Atlantis 39 Hull: Deep V, warped-section hull with 18° deadrise aft. Gelcoat finish is applied with extremely high precision using a state-of-the-art automated system
Hull construction material: the yard developed a building system called ISS (Integrated Structural System). This new building concept is based on integrated modules ensuring greater structural stiffness and strength. The different elements are cut by means of CNC pantographs. Building is carried out in an assembly line where at the end of each phase the item is tested and controlled before going on to the next phase. Moreover, a special infusion lamination process (optimized by the Azimut-Benetti group) is used for structural parts
Deck materials and characteristics: sandwich
Atlantis 39 Bow area: flush deck with narrow side decks and a slightly raised deckhouse with the round hatch of the underlying bow cabin and central double sun bed. Mooring operations are fast and safe thanks to the anchor windlass and the two mooring bitts. Wraparound railings
Cockpit arrangements and fittings: the cockpit may be adapted to one's tastes, it may be used as a sunbed but also for gregarious and culinary moments onboard by simply shifting cushions, seatbacks and table
Characteristics of the aft platform: integrated aft platform of suitable size for all water fun activities. The tested boat was fitted with a teak aft platform
Helm station: there is just one helm station in open air, it is fitted to starboard and features a futuristic look. The dashboard has a slightly slanted part which may be fitted with the bigger instruments such as the GPS, plotter or radar and a more slanted one where the analog engine instruments are mounted. The throttle and shift controls are to starboard on a jutting support. A comfortable settee may be used by the pilot both in the standing as well as in the sitting positions.

INTERIORS

Atlantis 39 Layout and characteristics: a few steps down from the cockpit there is the dinette with an L-shaped settee to starboard and the extending table; the galley is to port and a cabinet contains and conceals all fittings. The master stateroom is forward with a large central double bed, side lockers and en suite fully-fitted bathroom. Access to the guest cabin is aft of the dinette, on portside. The en suite bathroom is aft; the twin beds are fitted accross and may be easily joined to obtain a double bed.

FITTINGS

Atlantis 39 Standard fittings: aft sun bed cushioning and any item not included in the optional fittings list
Optional fittings: among others, the De Luxe and Extra Luxe design, teak companion ladder steps, teak cockpit, teak table and teak shower grid, covers and dinette and cockpit hatches, bow sun bed cushioning, air conditioning plant as requested by the owner, hard top, GPS, radar, automatic pilot, hi-fi system as requested by the owner and installed where preferred, generating set, bow thruster, hydroelectric gangway, holding and grey water tanks, icemaker, grill, refrigerator in cockpit, possible conversion of aft cabin, stainless steel anchor, crockery and cutlery sets, mosquito nets to hatches, "Atlantis" embroidered towels, copy of CE, compliance and yard certification.

IMPRESSIONS

SEA AND WEATHER CONDITIONS DURING BOAT TESTING
Wind: 15-knot southeasterly
Sea: force 3, increasing.

PERFORMANCE (with 3 passangers on board)
Time needed to reach planing speed: 12 seconds
Minimum planing speed at 2,100 rpm's: 12 knots.

EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE

Atlantis 39 Seakeeping ability, turning and behavior on waves: thanks to the V hull, smooth riding through waves; in large turns the hulls tends to slide to the side. In tight turns the 39 footer stern slightly slips and the boat's stability is somewhat affected. With the stern drive, being the rudder small, maneuvers in idle are not easily controlled. Response under way is immediate and precise. The bow thruster makes berthing and unberthing operations very simple
Helm station: the dashboard design and ergonomics are excellent and steering is comfortable and steady. For persons of average height, visibility is good when standing as well as on the sides, fair when sitting.

EVALUATION OF COMFORT AND FUNCTIONALITY

Atlantis 39 Deck: futuristic layout; settes and sun beds may be rapidly changed by shifting the seatbacks. Interesting solution for the cockpit table opening up like "flower petals". Nice aft platform with double side stairs leading to the side decks. The galley is fully fitted with sink, grill, refrigerator, locker and icemaker
Interiors: interiors are pleasant to the eye with an elegant and neatly trimmed design; the master cabin is ample and features an en suite bathroom with shower stall and glass sink; the double guest cabin easily converts into a twin cabin. The dinette is spacious and is fitted with a folding table, L-shaped settees and a fully-fitted galley. Finishing in bleached Tanganyika wood and other materials is good
Atlantis 39 Passengers' comfort: excellent for 4, walking spaces on deck are minimal. Excellent design and ergonomics solutions were adopted belowdecks
Galley: fully fitted with refrigerator, freezer, microwave oven, induction cooktops, galley covers convertible in trays
Bathrooms: painstakenly designed, modern, elegant and practical
Engine room: access to the engine room is incredibly large; an electrohydraulic control raises the aft deck showing the engine room
Electrical switchboard and plants: fully fitted and inserted in a dinette locker just like the audio and DVD systems.
