STABILE - STAMA 25
The Arturo Stabile shipyard boasts the continuity of four
generations and 125 years of uninterrupted activity, with an
accrued professionalism in the construction of working machinery
converging to the modern production of leisure boats.
The shipyard's history goes back to the 19th century, with the
great grandfather, a caulker, who started building tunny fishing
boats and sailing ships - the famous old Italian boats
"schifazzi". Later, he built bigger fishing boats, first in wood,
then in steel. In the World War aftermath, the shipyard expanded
considerably when it won the contract for supplying the technical
know-how, labor, machinery, equipment and starting-up of a
shipyard in Tunisia. Recently, the yard was ordered two deep-sea
steel fishing boats that are still on the slipway and a multi-
million dollar project for 3 steel power trawlers to be delivered
in three years time.
The habit of serving a professional clientele
is substantiated by the mental scheme of the yard's policy: the
size of the structures, even in the case of GRP pleasure boat
construction, is considerable. Stratification in the keel and in
the reinforcing plates under the deck, where mooring bitts,
stanchions and windlass are fitted is exuberant. The yard's
priority is safety: reinforcing plates are fitted in the aft
transom and resined waterproof boxes are fitted in the hull in
collision-prone areas to guarantee unsinkability even at full
load. Wood, handcrafted by master shipwrights, is largely used
together with the best isoftalic resins and neopentilic gel coat.
One must also consider the validity of the design. Young Maurizio
Stabile combined naval engineering technical expertise with the
yard's tradition and created the modern series of fast day
cruisers - STAMA stays for Stabile Maurizio - for sailing in any
weather conditions and with safety standards in compliance with
the EEC B Category rules.
The 27'5"-foot boat we tested is the
last delivered boat of the series (30 units were sold in 3 years).
The innovative folding pilot's seat top includes a small galley
with a two-burner range, a sink and a worktop. In a 25' boat,
avoiding a heat source belowdecks, where there are just the
electrical refrigerator and the worktop, is a bright idea. When
the bimini top is fitted on deck, a fully equipped, ample and
protected area is created. Here, one may cook, eat and sleep. On
request, the traditional fisherman version may be fitted with the
range belowdecks and a large icebox under the pilot's seat.
Forward, there is an ample cabin with cabinets and hanging lockers
along the sides, near the bulkhead. The separated bathroom, with
sink and marble top of the same color of the hull includes shower
with wooden grid and standard electrical toilet. Finally, under
the dashboard and behind the companionway ladder, there is another
double cabin. According to the expansion projects of the yard,
leisure boat building will be carried out in a new 330-sqft air-conditioned
building, that is under construction. Here, the production of the new 30'
and 37' footers with 6 berths will start in 1999.
