Nautica Editrice e-book: Nautica Superyacht, Spring 2009, page 178 MTU MTU oooooooo engines SERIES 2000 SERIES 2000 by Daniele Carnevali Recreational yachting has evolved in line with technological progress, how ever it has not only been limited to construction techniques, materials or anything setting a trend. In fact, the whole concept behind boat design and yachting in general has changed with the passing of time, especially so in the Supery acht sector. Owning a yacht of such a size today, spells wealth, it measures the owner's purchasing power who often buys it for its intrinsic luxury attributes, or to use it as his summer residence for par ties and business meetings, perhaps often keeping it in harbour, and only letting it out to sea on charters. If the owner's requirements have moved on in time, the same may not necessarily be said of the major shipbuilders world wide who, albeit still having to fulfi l their clients' re quirements on the one hand, while on the other, continue their search for progress, perfection and optimisation of object boat, in terms of straight safety. In this respect builders continue to work together with engine manufacturers to develop performing, reliable and environment friendly units. Consequently the engine manufacturing sector of the market, has also under gone great technological development over the last few years, partly pursuing its quest for performance and partly to satisfy new regulations against pollution. A good example of the progress attained is the fact that up to ten years ago it was unthinkable to fi t sports yachts with diesel engines that fell short of horsepower in comparison to their petrol driven coun terparts of the same cubic capacity. Today, diesels are widely adopted on all kinds of boats. Thanks to technologies such as fuel injection systems, nowadays diesel engines are able to offer the same output as petrol fuelled units keeping polluting emissions low. MTU of Germany, is one of the major manufacturers involved in the nautical market. It is part of the Tognum Group and its engines power a great deal of the Superyachts in circulation. MTU has added to its successes over the years and their reputation has grown because of the reliability of their engines and the wide choice of units available, used for open sports boats and displacing small ships alike. One of their more pop ular lines is the 2000 Series, which encompasses quite a number of engines that are compact, qui et and light, reliable, effi cient and built to provide easy maintenance access. These engines are chosen by a number of Yards from all over the world. They fulfi l SO LAS safety requirements as well as the stringent IMO and EPA Tier II Regulations in respect of noxious gas emis sions. The results obtained were also made possible thanks to a sophisticated injection system (Common Rail for the V8, V10, V12, V16 with individual pumps for the V12 and V16) governed by an electronic 176 176 176-177 177 SY20 SY20 INGL INGL MOTORI MOTORI MTU MTU.in
