"Air" is the name of the new Lürssen yacht designed in collaboration with designers Tim Heywood and Terence Disdale, who did the exterior and interior, respectively. As specifically requested by the owner, "Air" was designed with large windows to provide plenty of light for the spacious and well-proportioned interior areas. The furnishings are minimalist and only a few selected materials have been used so as to create an overall linear look. The interior volumes have been proportioned to create a virtually total separation between the owner- and crew areas, thus ensuring privacy for both. There is also ample liveable space abovedeck and an unusual amount of walkable surface. Tim Heywood's design fully expresses the owner's wishes: clean lines and wide spaces everywhere. This is clearly confirmed by the large pool we find on the main deck, by the flight area designed for the helicopter on the upper deck and by the gymnasium on the sundeck, which also features a personalised jacuzzi. The owner wanted not only very well-designed and eminently usable areas but also a certain ease of navigation, low noise - and pollution emission and limited vibration. These qualities have been achieved by using ABB azimuth electric-motors, which guarantee clean, linear distribution and essentially no vibrations or noise and, obviously, no exhaust emissions. The Azipods, which are particular propulsion systems usually installed on mercantile ships (especially, but not only, ro-ro) also ensure manoeuvrability in narrow waters because their configuration allows for short turning radii as compared to traditional systems, even at moderate speeds. The power necessary for the Azipods is provided by eight generators installed on elastic bases in separate areas. When in use, they produce much less noise and much less heat than the thermal units for propulsion.
