MTU: A NEW GOAL BY THE 2000 SERIES 12V AND 16V
Introduced at the last boat show in Cannes, the new engine by MTU
represents the top model of the 2000 range today, including also
the 8 and 10 cylinders ones put on the market right in 2004. The
exhibition of the new 16 V 2000 was held together with the
introduction of a further new version of the same 12 cylinders
series, thanks to which the MTU can offer prop solutions inside
the 2000 series made for 60 - 120 footers.
The market has very positively reacted to the introduction of the
MTU 2000 Common Rail series: actually, the factory has already
received orders for over 1.000 units of the range. Concerning
power and weight, the 16V provides 2.400 HP and weighs less than
3.400 kg with a power/weight ratio of 0.71 HP/Kg. So from what
just already said, easy results that it is about a very light
engine, right made for 80 to 120 footers.
In terms of weight - and space - saving, these noteworthy features
are also recognisable in the 12 cylinders engine providing a max
power of 2.000 HP and a weight of about 2.800 kg. Of course the
weight - and space - saving enables better space exploitation on
board without sacrificing fuel economy - consumption amounts to
210 g/kWh for both models according to MTU. Compared with the
previous versions the new one features about 20% additional power
and reduced fuel consumption to about 6%.
Summarising: the three features coming from an excellent research
working on by the MTU Friedrichshshafen is the increasing power
together with weight - and space - saving. All this actually
results from adopting a third generation Common rail system and
electronics suite capable to manage and optimize the engine
efficiency by using new software components and packages and a
very highly efficient turbo overfeed system, as well.
Of course, the two new models by MTU represent a new goal in the
field of engines right dedicated to super - yachts; the most
important international shipyards such as Ferretti Group have
actually very positively reacted to, ordering a consistent number
of these ultimate MTU engines at their introduction.
