AN AZIMUT FOR MONTOYA
On Monday 22nd May at the port of Monaco the McLaren-Mercedes team driver Juan Pablo Montoya formally took delivery of his new yacht, a splendid open Azimut 86 S. The M/Y Monty, as it is called, was fitted out in Viareggio where various customisations were carried out as requested by the champion: externally, a striking white metallic paint for the superstructures, while the maroon of the hull remains unaltered. Interiors in leather and natural fabrics, chosen together with his wife (… we decided everything in three hours, he told us). Montoya paid special attention to the hi-fi system, a multiroom from the Scots firm Linn, and to internet connections with a Communicator system from the Rome company Radio Marine; a 50" TV screen in the saloon and 37" in the cabins complete the media gear. The choice of water jets instead of surface propellers to transfer the 4000 HP of the engines to the sea, said the owner, was to reduce noise and vibrations. After the classic launching with a bottle of champagne smashed on the stern, Monty went out into Monaco waters for a brief inaugural sail.
