RENDERING
A famous Italian architect we met at the boat show in Ft Lauderdale
once told us- "at this stage, the use one makes of renderings in
magazines is a sort of lure or publicity spot, where to present boats
that'll never be built, with impossible designs or solutions that'll
never work ..." And more, "You people from the papers need to be
careful because the nautical press gives too much space to drawings,
to the renderings on which the sector's communication is being based
more and more, which is to say virtual boats that are the projection
of an image of something that isn't, that doesn't exist, that can't be
made, but which is in any case a form of accreditation. This is
misleading for the sector as a whole, for the market, for clients ..."
Guess what, all this came out whilst we were talking about Why, the
most talked about boat at the Monaco and Ft. Lauderdale boat shows,
although it wasn't there. Will it ever turn into something concrete,
will the latest outrageous design that Luca Bassani, Wally's creator,
has presented jointly with Hermes as the refined home of luxury ever
happen? But above all, is it misleading to talk about it? In our
opinion, no. Because especially in a sector such as yachting, where
there is historically speaking not much innovation, projects, also
simple formal exercises capable of stimulating the development of
yachting from a technical point of view as well as design and
functionality, need to be put forward, they act as stimulus;
especially in moments such as these, when the crisis today obliges and
will continue to impose upon designers and yards alike the need to
reconsider the new values and the new needs of owners, and give
yachting a new face. The basic concepts behind the Wally Hermes Yacht,
for example, perfectly focus attention on a new way forward towards
true innovation and in a certain sense suggest what it could be. We
have no idea whether the designer will ever find somebody prepared to
trump up the hefty 100 million euro needed to make it reality, but the
spaces, luxury, design, the liveable dimension, engineering, the
environmental themes, and all else on this island/ship are dealt with
in an innovative and very interesting way. All of this will probably
contribute in opening up the minds of many, ours included. We would
not want to be misunderstood, a few doubts of a technical nature, or
that at any rate need further investigation before we can evaluate its
feasibility or efficiency, have come to us too, especially when the
concept is extreme, such as the idea of using a "Ramform" hull, with
such unusual proportions and the consequent high degree of stability.
Yet merit must go to Bassani, as happened with the Wally Power 118', a
boat that didn't sell well but which was full of ideas that were in
many cases picked up by others, he has looked beyond, and is the first
to have addressed that which could be the future of yachting.
